COLUMBIA, S.C. – Consistency is key to any title that encompasses an entire year, and Berkley pro David Dudley was just that. Claiming his second AOY title, Dudley joins fellow Berkley pros Clark Wendlandt (2009, 2000, 1997) and Jay Yelas (2007, 2002) as the only FLW anglers to win multiple Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year titles. Dudley also received $100,000 for the title.
The Lynchburg, Va., native wrapped up the title at the final event on Pickwick Lake (Ala.).
“To win Angler of the Year you have to average a 20th-place finish or better in each event,” Dudley said. “It sounds easy, but there are a ton of great anglers on this tour. If you’re close to 25th in every event of the year you are on pace to earn a title. I have the utmost confidence in my abilities, but I never focus on Angler of the Year. To me, it is about focusing on one event at a time.”
Dudley began the season with a ninth-place finish at the Beaver Lake event. He followed up with 22nd- and 13th-place finishes at Lake Hartwell and Lake Chickamauga. He was in the top 10 again at the Red River event in Shreveport, La., with a seventh-place finish. He then posted his lowest finish of the year, 42nd, at the Kentucky Lake stop. Dudley barely missed the top-10 cut with an 11th-place showing at the final FLW Tour Major event of the year at Pickwick Lake.
Dudley has remained a dominant figure on the FLW Tour. To date in 2011, Dudley has notched four top-15 finishes, two of which are top-10 finishes. He has amassed five wins and 31 top-10 finishes in FLW Outdoors competition and won $2.6 million during his 16-year career. Dudley also is the youngest angler in the sport to surpass both the $1 million and $2 million marks.
